A Night of Recognition and Celebration for the Outstanding Contributions of Ireland's Charities

The 2023 Charity Excellence Awards, organized by Charities Institute Ireland, concluded with great enthusiasm and applause as winners from various categories were announced. The awards aim to highlight and reward excellence within the charity sector, spanning a full spectrum of individuals and organizations, from trustees to fundraisers and corporate partners.

This year's event saw an overwhelming response, with over 100 submissions across 11 diverse categories. The organizers extend their gratitude to each participant for showcasing excellence and highlighting the transformative impact achieved within their remarkable organizations.

A distinguished judging panel, led by the exceptional Kathleen O'Meara, showed unwavering diligence and transparent evaluation throughout the rigorous process. The high standard of entries magnified the sector's outstanding contributions to society, making the task of selecting winners particularly challenging.

The winners of the 2023 Charity Excellence Awards are:

  • Finance Team of the Year: Jack and Jill
  • Fundraising Campaign of the Year: Joint winners Focus Ireland and Irish Red Cross
  • Best Supporter Experience: Dogs Trust Ireland
  • Best Corporate Charity Partnership: Irish Youth Foundation and McDonald's
  • Small Charity Big Impact: Brighter Communities
  • Emerging Leader: Michelle Hynes from Focus Ireland
  • Outstanding Fundraiser of the Year: Ciara Feehely from Vita
  • Fundraising Team of the Year: Irish Red Cross
  • Excellence in Charity Leadership: Heydi Foster from An Cosan
  • People's Choice Award: Ronald McDonald House
  • Charity of the Year: Irish Refugee Council

Áine Myler, CEO of Charities Institute Ireland, expressed her pride and honor in recognizing and celebrating the outstanding achievements of charities and their dedicated teams at the awards ceremony. She emphasized the resilience and unwavering spirit of the charity sector in Ireland, thanking sponsors and supporters for helping to highlight the incredible work being done by charities across the nation.

The coveted 'Charity of the Year' award went to the Irish Refugee Council, an organization that has truly excelled over the past year, achieving remarkable accomplishments in support of their beneficiaries and garnering widespread admiration from the sector. Their vision to create a world where all individuals can enjoy their rights and dignity has left an indelible mark on countless lives. In the face of unprecedented challenges, including the sudden influx of over 80,000 people, the Irish Refugee Council rose to the occasion with unyielding compassion. Their impact reached 11,000 individuals directly, providing a lifeline through their helplines. From supporting families in their most vulnerable moments, their resilience and innovation knew no bounds. Their commitment to standing with those in need and their tireless efforts to create positive change exemplify the very essence of hope and humanity.

Commenting on the award, Nick Henderson, CEO of the Irish Refugee Council, said: “We are thrilled to have won this prestigious award, even being shortlisted alongside such amazing and impactful charities was an honour. We are in challenging times but our amazing staff, supported by our board, adapted and responded, changing lives and helping people to begin a brighter future. We are hugely grateful to the organizations and people who supported us, without which our work is not possible. We also hope the award will be considered a recognition of the amazing and important work being done by many organizations, big and small, across the country, supporting refugees and people seeking protection. Above all, we dedicate this award to the people we work with, whose courage and fortitude we are in awe of.”
