Gambling Regulation Bill - Update

This draft legislation has the potential to seriously impact on fundraising campaigns using raffles and lotteries, as they are deemed to be forms of gambling.

Since our recent meeting with the Minister of State, James Browne and Department of Justice officials, we have been working with Kathleen O’Meara, public affairs advisor, on the next steps in our advocacy campaign.  While we support this legislation which seeks to minimise gambling harm, we do not concur that charity fundraising efforts are at all similar to mainstream gambling products provided by large commercial companies.  We need to show that the unintended consequences of this catch-all legislation will have a disproportionate impact on the charity/not-for-profit sector.  This is why we have engaged NfPSynergy to undertake two surveys for us, and the findings will be key to our campaign.  The first survey will be gathering public opinion and feedback on charity raffles and lotteries.  We will survey members to capture the potential financial and marketing impact that this legislation could have on your ability to fundraise effectively.   This will be important data and we urge all members to fill out the survey as soon as it arrives.   We look forward to updating you on the results in the near future.
