Representative Recruitment

Our commitment to maintain a board with the necessary skills to govern MSF effectively and our commitment to be an inclusive board with diverse voices, we welcome candidacy from people who identify as members of underrepresented and/or historically marginalized communities to stand for election to the Board.

This includes welcoming candidacy from lived experiences such as being a recipient of humanitarian care and/or recent migrants.

Becoming a Trustee of the Board

Trustee's responsibilities and liabilities

The responsibilities of a trustee are substantial, essential and both an honour and reward to fulfil.

Together, the MSF Ireland Board shares ultimate responsibility for the affairs and management of MSF Ireland. It not only ensures that MSF Ireland maintains its focus on our core mission of effective delivery of medical care in accordance with MSF's core principles and values, but also that MSF Ireland conducts its business in an effective and efficient manner; with due care, accountability, responsible management of resources and in compliance with all Irish legal and regulatory requirements.

These are heavy responsibilities for which you can be liable, and, beyond reasonable expenses, you will not receive financial compensation. However, working together with other Board members, the MSF Ireland team and colleagues across the MSF movement is a rewarding and powerful way to continue saving lives and alleviating suffering.

Skills, experience, and qualities needed for governance

Our current board is comprised of six trustees with a broad range of valuable skills, qualities, and professional and personal experience. On average, once a year we recruit new trustees to replace trustees who have come to the end of their terms in office.

The mix of skills and experience we seek are driven by our wish to keep MSF Ireland true to its purpose, our “social mission”, ensuring that people in medical need are our primary concern. Alongside equipping ourselves to achieve these aims we need to ensure we can exercise overall control of MSF Ireland's business operations, manage our resources responsibly and agree and oversee the implementation of our strategy.

Required skills:

·        Experience of working or being a Board Member in the Irish charity or international humanitarian sector

·        A proven interest in humanitarian affairs

·        Experience as a recent immigrant and/or recipient of humanitarian aid will be considered favorably.

·        Experience in human resource management will be considered favorably.

An essential criterion is your ability to commit your time and energy

While the Board meets once every six to eight weeks on a Wednesday (virtually or in the Dublin office), trustees are expected to actively contribute to conversations, review documents, and communicate via email regularly.

However, additionally, it is desirable you have 'reserve time' for ad hoc meetings, conference calls and reading on top of scheduled Board meetings.

Interested?

To express your interest in becoming a trustee on the MSF Ireland Board:  Please submit your motivation letter and CV by 9 AM on Friday 30 September to chair@dublin.msf.org

Once the deadline has passed, the Trustee Recruitment Committee of the Board delegated to oversee trustee recruitment - will review your application and will notify you of next steps.

Please contact chair@dublin.msf.org if you have questions or to find out more about our recruitment processes.

In addition, you may request information about being a trustee on the Board and Eve Bruce (Board Chair), Laura Heavey (Trustee) or Aidan Stacey (Trustee) would welcome the chance to talk informally about any aspect of becoming a Board trustee.
